Re-Animator
Re-animator – (1985) – Stuart Gordon
'Don't be silly! Who's going to believe a talking head?' - Herbert West (Re-animator)
I first saw this movie at a girlfriends house when it came out on video. I wasn't sure what to expect and what I found was an exhilarating voyage into loonsville.
Loosely based on a Lovecraftian tale, medical student Herbert West (Jeffery Combs) develops a luminous green reagent that brings the dead back to life with disastrous consequences. This film is undoubtedly low budget but is laced with fantastic jokes and dollops of gore.
Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna go full out to impress and the films charaters are portrayed brilliantly by Jeffery Combes, Barbara Crampton and David Hill. From the moment the film starts you know that disaster is approaching and things get quaickly out of hand. Combes maniacal science student is abviously akin to Victor Frankenstein. He is possessed with a righteous persistance to prove his theories and boy does he do so, with disasterous consequences.
Over the top? I think so. Highly watchable? Definitely. You will feel like you're right back in the eighties watching this film. Bring popcorn and sickbags.
