It’s Alive (1974)

Bringing up baby.

Riding on a wave of environmental paranoia, It's Alive's theme is as apt nowadays as it was in 1974. It is probably even more apt now considering the rise of homeopathic medicines and organic food stuffs to counter all the 'unknown' chemicals that are around.

Larry Cohen’s brilliant observations of a couple tormented in different ways by the birth of their new baby (who just happens to be a mutant of the most horrific and violent variety), makes for uneasy viewing.

You would have thought that a film like 'It's Alive' would have been funny due to the material, but the superb leading actors give this film a truly creepy and thought provoking feel.

If you liked 'Rosemary's Baby' then you'll like 'It's Alive'. Although these two films couldn't be more different and 'alive is certainly lower budget, the overall uneasiness of the films is quite similar.

I highly recommend this film and especially for a monster movie night in. But ask yourself this question - What would you do if your child was a blood thirsty mutant crawling terror?

Leave a copy out for the babysitter.
